The 56th session of the United Nations Statistical Commission will be held in New York from 4 to 7 March 2025. UN Women will be well-positioned to ensure strong representation of gender statistics across the programme of work of the Commission, through a number of strategic interventions, including on citizen data and the recently published Gender Data Outlook.

The Friday Seminar examines how capacity development initiatives must enable robust and agile national statistical systems (NSS) to adapt effectively to evolving challenges. Participants will explore ways to strengthen the ability of NSS to deliver official statistics that meet user needs while fostering inclusive growth and sustainable development amidst rapid changes in the data ecosystem. The event will underscore the collective responsibility of all stakeholders in supporting NSOs, and discuss the roles of these stakeholders in ensuring that capacity development efforts are demand-driven, well-coordinated, and responsive to challenges while also addressing the importance of sustainable financing and mutual accountability mechanisms to support long-term progress.

Leveraging administrative data for statistical production: advocacy and metadata tools from the Collaborative on Administrative Data
The Collaborative on Administrative Data (CAD), led by the United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD), the Global Partnership for Sustainable Development Data (GPSDD) and UN Women, was established in 2020 to strengthen the capacity of national statistical systems to leverage the use of administrative data to fill data gaps and better monitor progress of 2030 Agenda, among others. The Collaborative brings together diverse stakeholders for learning and exchange of experiences to strengthen the capacity of countries on administrative data production and use. During this session, the tools developed within the Collaborative, aimed at supporting countries in these efforts, will be introduced, followed by an interactive, café-style discussion to foster deeper engagement and exchange.

The side event, organized by UNICEF and UNSD, in collaboration with the Inter-Secretariat Working Group on Household Surveys (ISWGHS) will present the revised handbook, including a special focus on child-centric dimensions in household surveys. UNICEF’s collaboration underscores the importance of capturing data on children’s lives to support evidence-based policies for their well-being and development.
