GenTRACK provides a comprehensive gender data resource for the Arab States, featuring 194 gender indicators across four thematic areas and eight sub-themes. Covering 17 countries and territories from 2000 to 2024, it offers deep insights into gender equality trends through extensive quantitative and qualitative data.

In addition to core gender statistics, the platform now includes:

  • Impactful Events: A timeline of up to 100 key occurrences per country, including policy shifts, legal reforms, and socio-economic context that may have influenced gender equality and women’s empowerment.
  • Enabling Environment: A color-coded legal analysis comparing 61 national laws per country with international standards and UN recommendations, highlighting progress and gaps in gender justice.

By integrating these contextual layers, the platform goes beyond numbers, providing a richer understanding of the historical, legal, and policy landscape shaping gender equality across the region.

About the Data

Credible Sources

The platform includes 194 gender-related time-series indicators by country, spanning over two decades. It leverages data from nine reputable global datasets and indices, including the World Bank, United Nations Statistics Division, Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA), Varieties of Democracy Index, International Labour Organization (ILO), and others.

Geographies

The platform covers 17 countries and territories in the Arab States region, as per UN Women’s coverage from its Cairo office, including: Algeria, Bahrain, Egypt, United Arab Emirates, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Oman, Palestine, Qatar, Syria, Saudi Arabia, Tunisia, and Yemen.

Indicators are grouped into four core thematic areas:

  • Women’s Economic Empowerment (WEE) – 144 indicators
  • Gender and Governance (GG) – 35 indicators
  • Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) – 26 indicators
  • Women, Peace, and Security (WPS) – upcoming

New Contextual Layers

To enhance interpretation and contextualize gender indicators, the platform now includes:

  • Impactful Events: A collection of up to 100 key events per country spanning over two decades—including policy changes, legal reforms, and socio-economic context —that have influenced gender equality and women’s empowerment.
  • Enabling Environment: A color-coded legal and policy analysis comparing 61 national laws per country with international human rights standards, UN recommendations, and Universal Periodic Reviews, identifying gaps and progress in gender justice frameworks.

Data Availability

Data coverage varies across countries, themes, and time periods. While some indicators have historical data as far back as 1965, most datasets are limited and non-uniform. To ensure relevance, GenTRACK reports only on data from 2000 onwards.
