Women and men interact with the environment for income generation, as well as for subsistence, leisure, tradition, religion and other purposes. Capturing the differences in women's and men's interactions with the environment is important to determine how they contribute to environmental conservation and degradation differently, and how they are affected by climate change, environmental degradation and pollution in diverse ways. Gender and Environment Surveys gather data on thse interactions between women, men and the environment. Utilizing the Model Questionnaire on Gender and the Environment, National Statistics Offices are increasingly gathering data on these interactions.
This list of 100 indicators was put together to provide a menu of options for countries wishing to measure environmental issues from a gender perspective. The list includes, among others, SDG indicators, Sendai indicators and indicators from the Asia-Pacific set of Gender-Environment indicators. All the indicators included in this list can be calculated utilizing individual-level populations surveys and, in particular, Gender and Environment Survey.
