The preliminary report on mobile phone ownership in Kenya provides data to report on Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) indicator 5.b.1: The proportion of individuals who own a mobile telephone, by sex. It was developed by reprocessing existing data from the Kenya integrated Household Budget survey of 2015-16.
The findings in this report are key in monitoring several aspects of gender equality, based on the inference that a mobile phone is a personal device that if owned, and not just shared, provides women with a degree of independence and autonomy in personal, professional, and economic spheres.
The preliminary report was developed by Kenya National Bureau of Statistics with financial and technical support from Women Count Kenya and in collaboration with the State Department for Gender and Communications Authority of Kenya.
