Brief Description
It is estimated that approximately 70,000 women aged 16-64 are exposed to physical violence on an annual basis. In 40 per cent of the total number of violence cases, the perpetrator is a present or former partner. This means that approximately 28,000 women aged 16-64 are the victims of partner violence every year. In the period 2000-2005, there was an estimated fall of one third (from 42,000 to 28,000) in the number of women victims of partner violence. It is estimated that approximately 29,000 children aged 0-15 are the victims of domestic violence on an annual basis. Approximately 2,000 women and a similar number of children move into shelter every year.
