Making Waves: Data For Advancing Gender-Responsive Ocean Sustainability

Making Waves provides a novel evidence base on the gender–ocean nexus, spanning all three dimensions of the triple planetary crisis: climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution. Oceans regulate the climate, sustain livelihoods and food security, and host most life on Earth. Yet warming waters, overfishing and pollution are eroding these functions, with impacts that are far from gender neutral. Drawing on official statistics, Gender-Environment Surveys, big data and innovative data integration techniques, the brief examines how ocean change affects women’s and men’s nutrition, health, and care work. It also looks at who shapes the ocean’s future, from fisheries management to ocean science and maritime governance. Pairing global and regional estimates with country case studies, it offers both the big picture and granular insight into the links between oceans, and gender equality. Making Waves equips policymakers, private sector, and civil society with evidence to support better and more gender-responsive ocean action.
