Brief Description

The National Human Rights Commission was established by the National Human Rights Commission Act of 1995, in line with the United Nations General Assembly Resolution No. 48/134 of 20 December 1993, which enjoins all Member States to establish National Human Rights Institutions relative to their environment. The Act empowers the Commission to target the poor and vulnerable and other victims of human rights abuse and violations, by offering services free of charge. It is non-technical, less time consuming and more accessible to the public.

The Commission has also facilitated the establishment of the Network on Monitoring and Documentation of Human Rights situations in Nigeria which is made up of the Commission and Civil Society Organizations. The Network monitors the state of the human rights situation in Nigeria.
