Brief Description

Under the Protection component of the National Strategic Action Plan to Eliminate Gender-Based Violence (NSAP-GBV), the National Shelter Unit was established in 2020 to provide safe spaces and comprehensive support for victims of gender-based violence and their dependent children. Since October 2022, the first government-owned and operated shelter has accommodated GBV survivors in the North-East and Eastern regions. Two state-owned shelters are operational, with a third under renovation in the Western region. The operation of these shelters is guided by the National Strategy for Shelters and Other Safe Spaces for Survivors of GBV and the Comprehensive Guidelines for the Operationalization of Gender-Based Violence Helplines in Jamaica.
