Brief Description
The Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act 1986 prohibits the indecent representation of women through advertisements or in publications, writings, paintings, figures or in any other manner and for matters connected therewith. Any person who contravenes to the provisions of this Act is punishable with imprisonment for a term which may extend to two years on first conviction and in the event of subsequent conviction, the imprisonment may extend to five years. To widen the scope of this Act, changes suggested by the National Commission for Women are being examined by the Ministry of Women and Child Development (MWCD).
