COVID-19 presented a challenge for the State of Guatemala. The pandemic represented a different panorama in the countries regarding human trafficking, derived from the use of different mechanisms for the recruitment of victims by traffickers, as a result of the restrictions determined by the authorities. These situations had an impact on the increase in the use and access to the Internet and social networks by different sectors of the population, as well as the growth in the demand for pornography, as a form of human trafficking.

In this context, from the institutions that work on the subject of human trafficking and particularly the Secretariat against Sexual Violence, Exploitation and Trafficking in Persons -SVET-, actions were organized and planned to prevent this crime, with the aim of bringing informative messages to the population, using different media and the human resources available both in central offices and the team hired at the national level.

The commitment to continue developing strategies and actions in this context is highlighted, which is important and necessary for the countries; count on the support, participation and joint work of the different sectors: public institutions, Civil Society Organizations, International Organizations, among others, that allow the adoption of strategies and actions to prevent human trafficking in the context of COVID-19.

Therefore, actions were implemented to raise awareness and reduce the risks of human trafficking, promote the culture of reporting and encourage the general population to prevent this crime; using for this purpose, technological resources, coordination and reformulation of strategies that are functional to the challenges presented by the pandemic.

At SVET, the team's activities were rethought at the national level, that is, 39 consultants who are part of the National Plan for the Prevention of Sexual Violence, Exploitation and Human Trafficking, to promote actions to prevent crimes of sexual violence, exploitation and human trafficking within the framework of COVID-19, in coordination with the National Civil Police, Departmental Governments, Municipalities, Churches and other sectors at the community level.

El COVID-19 presentó un desafío para el Estado de Guatemala, la pandemia representó un panorama distinto en los países respecto a la trata de personas, derivado de la utilización de mecanismos distintos para la captación de víctimas por parte de los tratantes, producto de las restricciones determinadas por las autoridades, estas situaciones repercutieron en el incremento de la utilización y acceso al internet y redes sociales por diferentes sectores de la población, así como el crecimiento de la demanda de pornografía, como una modalidad de la trata de personas.

En ese contexto, desde las instituciones que trabajan en la temática de trata de personas y particularmente la secretaria contra la Violencia Sexual, Explotación y Trata de Personas -SVET-, se organizó y planifico acciones de prevención de este delito, con el objetivo de llevar mensajes informativos a la población, utilizando diferentes medios y el recurso humano con que cuenta tanto en oficinas centrales, como el equipo contratado a nivel nacional.

Se resalta el compromiso de continuar desarrollando estrategias y acciones en este contexto, lo cual es importante y necesario para los países; contar con el apoyo, participación y trabajo conjunto de los diferentes sectores: instituciones públicas, Organizaciones de Sociedad Civil, Organismos Internacionales, entre otros, que permitan adoptar estrategias y acciones para prevenir la trata de personas en el contexto del COVID-19.

De esa cuenta, se replantearon acciones para difundir, socializar y dar a conocer los riesgos de la trata de personas, promover la cultura de denuncia e incentivar a la población en general a prevenir dicho crimen; empleando para ello, los recursos tecnológicos, coordinaciones y reformulación de estrategias que sean funcionales ante los retos que se presentaron por la pandemia.

En la SVET se realizó el replanteamiento de las actividades del equipo a nivel nacional, es decir, 39 consultores que forman parte del Plan Nacional de Prevención de la Violencia Sexual, Explotación y Trata de Personas, para promover acciones de prevención de los delitos de violencia sexual, explotación y trata de personas en el marco del COVID-19, en coordinación con la Policía Nacional Civil, Gobernaciones Departamentales, Municipalidades, Iglesias y otros sectores a nivel comunitario.
