Why is data missing?

There are large gaps in gender data which make women and girls invisible. This is because:

  • Countries often don’t invest enough in collecting gender statistics
  • Data on issues facing women and girls are not collected frequently
  • There is a knowledge gap on collecting data on new and emerging issues

Only 12 of the 53 gender-specific indicators have data regularly produced. And 6 of the 17 goals lack gender-specific indicators altogether. This is why you will see plenty of gaps in the SDG data available here.
